Sustainable use of animals and plants
The National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 allows for the sustainable use of native animals and plants under certain circumstances. This includes hunting of protected native animals during a declared open season and non-native animals generally.
Specific sustainable use activities include:
- Commercial harvesting of some kangaroo and wallaby species
- Hunting of some duck and quail species during declared open seasons
- Collection of native plant material
- Farming of emus
- Hunting of feral and unprotected animals
- Live collection of galahs and little corellas from the wild
