Anyone can nominate an Object for heritage consideration.

The criteria for the registration of an Object on the South Australian Heritage Register is covered by Section 16(2) of the Heritage Places Act 1993.

An object is of heritage significance if –

(a) It is an archaeological artefact, or any other form of artefact that satisfies 1 or more of the criteria set out under section 16 (1) of the Heritage Places Act.

(b) It is a geological, palaeontological or speleological specimen that satisfies 1 or more of the criteria set out under section 16 (1) of the Heritage Places Act.

(c) It is an object that is intrinsically related to the heritage significance of a State Heritage Place or a State Heritage Area.

If you would like to nominate an Object under (c) above, keep in mind that 'Intrinsic' means 'being an extremely important and basic characteristic of a person or thing.' Therefore, if you are considering nominating an object, be mindful of the Heritage Significance of the Place or Area the Object relates to and think about how you demonstrate the intrinsic connection to that heritage significance.

We are here to help! To assist in determining whether or not the object you are interested in nominating is covered by the three criteria, it is suggested that you contact Heritage South Australia on telephone 8372 7521 and ask to speak to an Assessment Officer.

Two examples of Objects listed in the South Australian Heritage Register include the Burra Jinker – intrinsically related to the Burra Mines Historic Site; and the Weighbridge, Islington Railway Complex – intrinsically related to the Fabrication Shop, Islington Railway Workshops.
