From time-to-time qualified heritage consultants are engaged to survey an area. Heritage surveys can be of a local council area, of a region or can survey the whole state for places that fit a particular theme eg 20th century heritage. These surveys identify potential places of state and local heritage significance and potential historic conservation areas.

Please note, the language and terminology used in heritage surveys reflects the context and culture of the time in which they were written and may include words, phrases, and attitudes that would be deemed insensitive, inappropriate or factually inaccurate today. First Nations people should be aware that heritage surveys may contain images and names of deceased persons in the form of photographs and printed material.
