You can apply for most hunting permits using the online permits system. Note that duck and quail hunting permits will be available from early March 2024.

Duck hunting

Duck hunting is only allowed during a declared Duck Hunting Open Season and only for prescribed species. The 2024 Duck Open Season in South Australia has been declared. Quail hunting

Quail hunting is only allowed during a declared Quail Hunting Open Season. The 2024 Quail Open Season in South Australia has been declared. Hunting for feral animals, including deer

A Basic Hunting Permit is required. Please see the Information You Need to Know - Basic Hunting Permit which summarises the regulatory requirements that must be complied with. To apply for this permit, fill out the online form.

Hunting other native animals

Some native animals are not protected by legislation, but you may still need a permit to take them from the wild.

  • A Basic Hunting Permit is required to take unprotected animals listed on Schedule 10. To apply for this permit, fill out the online form.
  • A permit is required to take juvenile galahs and juvenile little corellas. To apply for this permit, download the form.
  • A permit is required to take galahs or little corellas by trapping. To apply for this permit, download the form.

Aboriginal hunting and gathering

  • A hunting permit is not required if an Aboriginal person hunts an animal to be used in food for the hunter or his or her dependents, or solely for cultural purposes of Aboriginal origin.
  • A hunting permit is required if an Aboriginal person hunts an animal to sell.
