RAA Charge: South Australia’s statewide electric vehicle charging network
With the support of a $12.35 million grant from the state government, RAA has built South Australia’s first border-to-border electric vehicle (EV) charging network. Comprising more than 140 charging sites and 540 charging bays, this comprehensive statewide network is empowering South Australians to choose an EV to decarbonise their personal and business travel.
In less than two years of construction, the RAA Charge network has grown to become one of the most comprehensive charging networks in Australia. With 75% of its charging stations in regional areas, the network includes a mix of 150kW and 200kW chargers and 7kW destination chargers that are well matched to the long-distance driving and charging preferences of EV owners.
The network is strategically designed to ensure chargers are available every 50km to 100km at popular ‘rest stop’ towns along highways, ensuring no two charging sites are more than 200 kilometres apart – well within the 300km to 500km highway driving range of a typical EV.
With transport contributing 39% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2022-23, the RAA Charge network is already playing a key role in empowering South Aussies to choose an electric vehicle to decarbonise their personal transport.
To date, the RAA Charge network has provided over 192,000 charging sessions, contributed to demand for over 24.1GWh of clean energy, powered over 155 million kms, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 6,403 tonnes. By 2030, the state government’s foresight and RAA’s leadership will enable over 2.13 billion kilometres of EV travel powered by 331GWh of clean energy, displacing 151 million litres of petrol and reducing South Australia’s transport emissions by at least 370,000 tonnes.
RAA has pioneered Time of Use charging rates in South Australia, that incentivise drivers to charge when the state’s renewable energy generation is highest – reducing motoring costs and encouraging more efficient use of the electricity system.
Voted ‘Best Charging Station in Australia’ in 2024 by the Electric Vehicle Association of Australia, the RAA Charge site at Snowtown is an example of RAA’s user centred design and site selection process requiring collaboration with over 130 local businesses and 40 councils.
In the absence of any national standards for designing accessible public EV chargers, RAA conducted an accessibility trial in partnership with disability consultants and users. The trial resulted in the RAA developing and implementing Design Guidelines for Accessible EV Charging Stations, which set a new standard for best practice EV charging in Australia.
The service and maintenance RAA offers is underpinned by its 120-year history of being there for its members when they need it most. RAA has consistently achieved 99.5% network uptime, providing EV drivers with a reliable, dependable service, which is essential in regional areas.
Having successfully completed the network in 2025, the RAA Charge team is now providing tailored fleet and commercial EV charging solutions for councils and businesses.
