Coastal development applications

Proposals for new development or substantial changes to land use on ‘coastal land’ are referred to the Coast Protection Board for comment. Almost all responses are provided under delegated authority by the department’s coastal planning officers.

The Coastal planning information package outlines this process and assists planners, developers and councils to:

  • determine whether a proposed development site is on ‘coastal land’ and therefore whether a referral to the Coast Protection Board is required

  • assist with the assessment of a development application which is on ‘coastal land’

  • identify what information should be provided with the development application

  • prepare planning policy about coastal issues.
