The River Murray is the main source of water in South Australia so it is important that we take care of the river and use water sustainably.

Little decisions we make to use water wisely can collectively make a big difference to the impact we have on the river’s health.

Here are some tips on how to use less water at home:

  • Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth
  • Cut your shower time back to four minutes
  • Install a low flow showerhead and dual flush toilet
  • Use a plug in the basin when shaving
  • Fill your dishwasher and washing machine before turning them on
  • Install water efficient taps or tap aerators
  • Water your garden early in the morning or late in the evening
  • Mulch your garden regularly
  • Choose local native varieties and other water-wise plants
  • Water your garden by hand with a watering can or trigger nozzle

Of course, as the broader South Australian community we'll still need to use water smarter and reduce our dependence on the River Murray by tapping into a variety of other water resources. Our Water for Good Plan outlines the ways in which we're doing this.

The South Australian Government is working to reduce our reliance on the river by diversifying our state’s water supply, through stormwater, wastewater and the desalination plant, and supporting industry and community to use water more efficiently.
