Change Detection Program
The Native Vegetation Council and the department undertake a native vegetation monitoring and compliance program across the state. It includes monitoring the progress of offsets to provide advice, ensure compliance with conditions of clearance, and confirm that biodiversity benefits are being achieved.
For example, the Native Vegetation Council carries out an annual Change Detection Program using satellite imagery to detect changes to the quality and quantity of the native vegetation in the state’s rural agricultural regions.
The Program makes comparisons of satellite images taken at regular intervals over extended periods of time. All changes to the native vegetation landscape are then additionally verified using methods such as high resolution aerial photography and site inspections.
The Native Vegetation Change Detection Program fact sheet provides a detailed explanation of the Program and examples of satellite images.
