To farm emus, you must hold an emu farming permit.

Permit holders must comply with the conditions of their permit, and follow the Code of practice below.

Code of practice

The Australian model Code of practice for the welfare of animals - husbandry of captive bred emus provides the minimum standards for emu farming. The code covers the basic requirements for the wellbeing of farmed emus, including protection from:

  • predators
  • disease
  • extremes of climate
  • pain, distress, suffering and injury.
