Veterinary professional training – native wildlife treatment

We’re boosting opportunities for qualified veterinarians and veterinary nurses to undertake training in wildlife treatment.

This page will help you:

  • Learn about the training and funding program
  • Express your interest in participating in the training

About the training and funding program

As part of its commitment to support the volunteer rescue and rehabilitation sector, the state government is helping vets and vet nurses expand their skills in wildlife treatment.

This recognises the important role veterinary professionals play in the assessment and treatment of native animals, and supports the volunteer rescue organisations that work tirelessly to protect our wildlife.

This four-year funding program will initially support qualified individuals to attend an existing training course in 2026. Training opportunities will then be offered annually, which may include the development of bespoke South Australian training courses.

2026 training opportunity

To help you gain knowledge and skills in treating and caring for native wildlife, we’re partnering with Taronga Conservation Society Australia to subsidise places in its Veterinary Professional Training in Wildlife Treatment and Care course.

This course is accredited with the Australian Veterinary Association and the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia for CPD points, and will be delivered via a blended learning model combining online distance education and a workshop in Queensland.

Course details:

  • Online distance education (20 hours of content to work through prior to undertaking the practical workshop) - 20 CPD points
  • One-day intensive practical workshop in Queensland, June 2026 - 12 CPD points

The full cost of participating in the course will be covered, along with subsidised travel and accommodation to attend the in-person workshop in June 2026.

To be eligible to participate, you must:

  • be a fully qualified veterinary professional (i.e. vet, vet nurses and vet techs); and
  • work in a veterinary clinic or hospital in South Australia

Capacity will be limited. If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place in this year’s training, you can register your interest to be informed about future training opportunities.

More information will be made available and provided to interested applicants. Please express your interest below to be kept informed.
