Discovery, dreamtime and dolphins – dip into December’s Park of the Month events

Events as part of Park of the Month include:

  • 6 December - An Introduction to Migratory Shorebirds. A free event to learn about and see the amazing birds that roost and feed along the shore at St Kilda.
  • 12 December - visitors can take part in a tour of Kaike (Granite Island). Led by Kool Tours, guests will learn how Nurrunderi, the creator, shaped the landscape, including The Bluff, by casting his club into the sea from Umbrella Rocks. This tour is offered at a subsidised rate.
  • 18 December - an awe-inspiring virtual reality experience will get visitors up close to marine life. Held at Studio 20 Youth Centre in Aldinga, visitors will don VR technology to connect with the wonder, beauty and resilience of our marine environments.
  • 18 December - a screening of David Attenborough’s documentary Ocean at Victa Cinema. Attenborough’s doco promotes his message of hope and spans 100 years of incredible ocean discovery.

The Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary (ADS) is located in the Port Adelaide River/Barker Inlet and is home to a resident population of around 20 bottlenose dolphins.

Since its incarnation 20 years ago, the sanctuary has provided dolphins with a high level of protection, provided a focal point for dolphin and marine environment research, and influenced the management of the state’s busiest port, including boat speed limits.

While resident bottlenose dolphins tend to spend their time in and around the sanctuary, there are plenty of transient dolphins as well as a host of fish species, long-nosed fur seals and endangered Australian sealions.

A 10,000-year-old mangrove forest, seagrass, saltmarsh, tidal flats and creeks surround the sanctuary, making it a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

The SA Maritime Museum and Port Adelaide Enfield Council’s visitor information centre are great additional stops to discover more about dolphin biology, ecology and human interactions.
