Coorong National Park is the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s (NPWS) Park of the Month this November, highlighting one of South Australia’s most iconic wetland environments.

Stretching about 180 kilometres from the Murray Mouth to Kingston SE, the park features a unique network of lagoons, islands, beaches and saltwater habitats that support abundant wildlife, including thousands of migratory shorebirds and waterbirds.

District Ranger Stuart Hicks said the park’s famous wetlands, rich cultural heritage and unique coastal landscapes make it a popular attraction for visitors from around the globe.

“Internationally recognised as a Ramsar-listed wetland, Coorong National Park offers something for everyone, from wildlife watching and cultural experiences to boating, fishing and four-wheel driving,” Mr Hicks said.

“The park also holds enormous cultural significance for the Ngarrindjeri People, who have lived in and cared for this landscape for thousands of years. The name Coorong comes from the Ngarrindjeri word Kurrangk, meaning long, narrow neck.”

Mr Hicks said the November Park of the Month program has been designed to help people connect with the park in diverse and engaging ways.

“Visitors can immerse themselves in the Coorong’s spectacular coastal landscapes through an on-site art class, participate in citizen science events with Adelaide University researchers, discover the vital role of the Goolwa Barrage with insights from DEW, SA Water and Ngarrindjeri representatives, and enjoy the breathtaking Spirit of the Coorong cruise,” Mr Hicks said.

“For November only, Spirit of the Coorong is also offering 25 per cent off its regular cruises, making it the perfect time to experience this remarkable landscape for less.”

NPWS will host a range of activities and experiences designed to help visitors connect with the park’s landscapes, wildlife, culture and stories, including:

  • Art in the Park with Gilbert Dashorst – 7 November
  • Science on the Shore at Parnka Point – 25 November
  • Goolwa Barrage Talk – 26 November
  • Cruise the Coorong with Spirit of the Coorong – All month
  • 42 Mile Crossing Treasure Hunt – All month
  • Coorong Nature Hunt – All month
