Prescribed burn at Stonyfell Quarry
Date posted: 13 Oct. 2026
A prescribed burn is planned on private land at Stonyfell Quarry in the Mt Lofty Ranges on Wednesday, 14 October, weather conditions permitting. The prescribed burn will start at 11:30am and is likely to be completed by 8:00pm. Flames and smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.
- The area to be burnt is 18.6 hectares adjacent to Horsnell Gully Conservation Park.
- Aircraft will be used to help deliver and manage this burn.
- This is a fuel-reduction burn to reduce the risk of bushfire spreading through the Horsnell Gully area and impacting on properties in Ashton and Greenhill.
- There will be no road closures.
- Walkers and bike riders should not enter the Stonyfell Quarry and avoid using the Track 45 fire track.
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.
NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
