Prescribed burn at D'Estrees Bay
Date posted: 15 Oct. 2025
A prescribed burn is planned at D'Estrees Bay on Kangaroo Island on Thursday, weather conditions permitting. The prescribed burn will start at 11am on October 16 and is likely to be completed by 5pm the same day.
- The area to be burnt is 232 hectares on private land on Seagers Road, 4 kilometres west of the D'Estrees Bay settlement.
- This is a landscape protection burn to create low fuel areas to reduce the risk of bushfires impacting the MacGillivray and D'Estrees Bay communities.
- Aircraft will be used to help deliver and manage this burn.
- No roads or walking trails are planned to be closed during the burn.
- D'Estrees Bay Road and the D'Estrees Bay settlement will be impacted by smoke.
- Smoke may be visible in the area for a number of days following the burn.
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.
NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
