Prescribed burn at Burr Slopes South Native Forest Reserve

Date posted: 05 Dec. 2025

A prescribed burn is planned at Burr Slopes South Native Forest Reserve on the Limestone Coast on Sunday 7 December, weather conditions permitting.

  • The prescribed burn will start at 10am on Sunday, 7 December and is likely to be completed by 9pm the same day.
  • Flames and smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.
  • This is a landscape protection burn to reduce the fuel load in the reserve.
  • The area to be burnt is approximately 24 hectares on the western side of Overland Track, south of Rock Shelter Track, 1.5km south of Mount Burr Tower and 8km east of Lake Leake.
  • People in and around the townships of Glencoe, Tantanoola, and Millicent will observe smoke from the site, and may be impacted by smoke depending on direction of the wind.
  • No roads are proposed to be closed however, the burn site and adjacent forestry tracks will not be accessible to the public for the duration of the burn.
  • Rock Shelter Track will be impacted by smoke.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity.

Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
