Roam the Ranges this July

The Ikara-Flinders Ranges is the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) park of the month with July offering double the fun as it coincides with NAIDOC Week (6 -13 July) and the school holidays.

Roam the Ranges this July

The Ikara-Flinders Ranges is South Australia’s largest mountain-range and forms an ancient landscape of folded and faulted rock which stretches over 430 km.

“Visitors to the Ranges will discover some of the oldest evidence of animal life, an array of plants and animals and get to learn about the cultural identity, history and traditions of the Adnyamathanha people, the Traditional Owners of the Flinders Ranges,” said Phil Strachan, National Parks and Wildlife Manager Flinders and Outback.

A Yura Malka NAIDOC Week tour should be the first stop on your tour of the Ranges.

Book and join a guided exploration on 8 July, starting at the Wilpena Pound Woolshed. This is a unique opportunity to experience Adnyamathanha Country through Aboriginal eyes and involves walking and driving (high clearance required).

The abundance of clear-sky days makes Ikara-Flinders Rangers National Park an excellent destination for stargazing. Join Stellar Science on 17 and 18 July for subsidised stargazing tours from Wilpena Pound.

The NPWS Bounceback program has seen the successful reintroduction of several locally extinct species of native marsupial into Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Join an ecologist on 19 July to learn about the program and go on a night walk through the mountains. Maybe you’ll get lucky and see a quoll or possum!

While in the region, visit the Nilpena Ediacara National Park – a must for all history, nature and science buffs as the Ediacaran fossils date back to the earliest complex animal life. Take advantage of a money-saving offer which means free entry for children accompanying a full-paying adult on the Ediacara Experience Tour.

“There’s nowhere quite like the Ikara-Flinders Ranges and with plenty of activities on offer now’s the perfect time to visit. Check out all the exciting events on offer and make sure to book your spot now!” Phil said.
