Fire danger closes parks

Many of South Australia's national parks and reserves will be closed tomorrow due to catastrophic fire danger conditions.

Fire danger closes parks

Parks in Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Mid North and Yorke Peninsula will be closed tomorrow, 20 November, due to catastrophic fire danger forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Fire ratings in all other regions are either severe or extreme and the CFS has declared a statewide total fire ban.

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia Executive Director Mike Williams said, the closures would begin at 12.01am on Wednesday and will be in place until midnight.

“We are closing parks in the districts with catastrophic fire danger ratings in the interests of public safety,” Mr Williams said.

“Extremely high temperatures and strong winds are predicted across the state, and firefighters might not be able to control a bushfire if one starts under these conditions.

“Anyone already in a park in an affected area is asked to leave by tonight. Rangers will be out in parks to advise people that the park will be closing and they must leave.

“We also ask that people do not drive through any of the regions tomorrow where the danger has been declared catastrophic.”
