Our conservation efforts are all focussed on maintaining, improving and protecting South Australia's natural assets. This recognises that the land provides a place to live, grow food, access resources for construction, development and other economic purposes. Our land includes a range of natural environments with associated biodiversity, and provides us with a place to have cultural, social and recreational experiences.
The department is a significant land manager in South Australia, responsible for Crown land and (state) parks and reserves. This equates to about one-quarter of all land in the state.
The department has a role in undertaking sustainable land management and conservation practices on its own land (such as fire management), but also has a major role in supporting and improving sustainable land management activities on all land through integrated natural resource management.
