Prescribed burn at Ngarkat Conservation Park

Date posted: 16 May 2025

A prescribed burn is planned at Ngarkat Conservation Park on Monday 19 May 2025, weather conditions permitting.

• The burn will start at 11am on Monday and is expected to be completed by 6pm that evening.

• The area to be burnt is 100 hectares within the northeast section of the park.

• Smoke will be visible from the Ngarkat Highway during and after the burn.

• The speed limit on the Ngarkat Highway will be reduced and delays might occur.

• The aim of the burn is to reduce fuels along the Ngarkat Highway Buffer Zone and provide landscape protection to Ngarkat Conservation Park and Big Desert Wilderness area.

• National Parks and Wildlife Service crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
