Head to the Hills in June

One of Adelaide’s most popular hiking destinations, Morialta Conservation Park, joins Black Hill
Conservation Park as June’s Park of the Month.

A person stands at the entrance of a large cave at Morialta Conservation Park, South Australia, looking out over a lush forested valley bathed in golden morning light. Sunlight filters through tall gum trees, casting a warm glow on the red rock walls and curved stone steps inside the cave.

Black Hill has more than 300 species of native plants and popular wildlife like blue wrens, southern boobook owls and southern brown bandicoots, while Morialta’s range of recreational offerings have made it a favourite with visitors for more than a century.

These neighbouring parks are popular year-round, but the month’s schedule offers a chance to join events led by local experts.

Senior ranger Kurtis Madigan said recent rain and the change of season meant the parks were alive with things to see.

“After a dry summer, the falls are flowing again at Morialta. It was unusual for there to be no water flowing for several months, so now is the time to head up to see the falls and the winter flowers,” he said.

June’s activities include:

Night Walk in Morialta – Wednesday 10 June 6pm-8pm

Join rangers for a rare chance to experience the park after dark on a guided walk to the waterfall and back, and hopefully see which animals come out at night.

Pop-up Rangers – Sunday 14 June 9.30am-12.30pm (no need to book)

Meet rangers at two pop-up stations along the First Falls Walk at Morialta. They will be answering questions and will also have a variety of activities to help walkers learn about animals in the park.

Black Hill Summit Guided Hike – Wednesday 24 June 9.45am-1pm.

People with a reasonable level of fitness can join a ranger on this rugged grade five hike to the summit. There will be bushwalking tips and environmental titbits provided as you walk the 4.2km loop, with possible creek crossings.

Nature Play at Mukanthi Playground – Sunday 28 June 10am-12pm

Join rangers for a morning of fun and environmental learning through a hands-on experience discovering the life cycle of frogs, including painting tadpoles and frogs on rocks to take home.
