River Murray surface water monitoring station upgrades
As part of the Department for Environment and Water’s SA Constraints Measures project, 4 River Murray surface water monitoring stations have been identified for upgrades that will enable them to better withstand enhanced environmental flow events.
Upgraded stations have now been installed at Mannum and Murray Bridge, with works scheduled to begin on stations at Loxton and Lake Bonney, Barmera in October (sheduled completion January 2026)
Works include the fabrication and installation of monitoring infrastructure that will enhance resilience and water monitoring capabilities during high flows and flood events.
The upgrades will allow for continuous data collection during a wide range of flow conditions, allowing operators to effectively manage the river, and communities to stay informed of actual water levels and flows, including during enhanced environmental watering events.
These upgrades build upon works completed in 2024 at Swan Reach, Walker Flat and Lock 1, and form part of the SA Constraints Measures project’s commitment to removing barriers to the delivery of environmental water, in order to improve the health of the state’s River Murray floodplains and wetlands.
The $90.79 million South Australia Constraints Measures project supports infrastructure upgrades that enhance environmental water delivery, community resilience and access during high-flow events. The project is delivered by the Government of South Australia and funded by the Australian Government as part of the Basin Plan.
