Looking for a memorable day walk in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park? The team from Walking Trails Support Group have selected three of their favourite circuit walks, based on decades of maintaining and walking trails in the park, along with feedback from countless fellow walkers.

From ancient geology and pastoral history to stunning views and wildlife encounters, these walks showcase the incredible diversity of one of South Australia's most remarkable landscapes. Part of a region being nominated for World Heritage listing, Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park offers experiences found nowhere else on Earth.

Top tips before you head out:

  • Trail markers are located approximately every 200 metres on these walks, with maps available from trailhead information boxes and the Flinders Ranges Walks App on iPhone or Android.
  • You can also find detailed maps, walk leaflets, plant lists, geology information and trail images at the Walking Trails Support Group website.
  • Check any closures and alerts for the park before locking in your trip.

1. Wilcolo Circuit Walk

Distance: 9.2km (5 hrs return) | Grade: Moderate, Class 3

Starting from Bunyeroo Carpark, the Wilcolo Circuit is a peaceful walk with no steep sections.

The walk first follows the bank of Wilcolo Creek giving views ahead of the peaks of Wilpena Pound.

It turns to cross the creek to find a little gorge with giant Red Gums. There are geological markers explaining the rocks you walk over.

Uphill through to pine woodland takes you to a viewpoint with topogram naming the distant peaks. Lots of views from this open spot.

Downhill through Silver Wattle shrubs brings you to Bunyeroo Creek which you wander along to meet the road back to the carpark.

Why it's a favourite: Scenic, uncrowded and packed with variety.

2. Yuluna Circuit Walk

Distance: 8.4km (4 hrs return) | Grade: Moderate, Class 3

Beginning at Aroona Carpark, the Yuluna Circuit blends pastoral history with excellent wildlife-watching opportunities.

The trail passes the ruins of a shepherd's hut associated with early pastoralist J.F. Hayward and follows Yuluna Creek through diverse habitats that support echidnas, birds and, after rain, native frogs (Crinia riparia).

A short climb near the end leads walkers back through native pine woodland, with an optional detour to Heysen Viewpoint.

Why it's a favourite: A fascinating mix of history, wildlife and beautiful creek landscapes.

3. Trezona Circuit Walk

Distance: 8.2km (4 hrs return) | Grade: Moderate, Class 3

For walkers interested in geology, the Trezona Circuit is hard to beat.

Starting near Trezona Campground, this loop takes you past evidence of some of the earliest life on Earth, including stromatolites, Ediacaran fossils and ancient glacial deposits that form part of the globally significant geological story of the Flinders Ranges. Long views, creek crossings and historic hut ruins add to the experience.

Why it's a favourite: A chance to walk through more than 600 million years of Earth's history.
