Parks and Wilderness Council

The Parks and Wilderness Council was established on 1 July 2015 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972.

The Council works with all sectors of the community and all levels of government to provide strategic leadership on the whole protected area system in South Australia.

The protected area system covers both public and private land and is the cornerstone of our efforts to conserve nature. The Council is required to carry out its functions under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 along with the functions assigned to the Council under the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary Act 2005, the Marine Parks Act 2007 and the Wilderness Protection Act 1992, and provides advice at the Minister’s request on any matter relating to the administration of these four Acts for which the Council has a legislative role.
