Prescribed burn at Finniss Conservation Park

Date posted: 08 May 2026

A prescribed burn is planned at Finniss Conservation Park on the Fleurieu Peninsula on Monday, weather conditions permitting.

The prescribed burn will start at 2.15pm Monday, 11 May and is likely to be completed by 4pm the same day. Smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.

  • The area to be burnt is 13.1 hectares within the park, which is approximately 7km northeast of the Mount Compass township.
  • This burn is supporting a larger operation that will be undertaken in a future season to regenerate the heath vegetation for threatened birds, including the chestnut-rumped
    heathwren.
  • No roads or trails will be closed throughout the burn.
  • Smoke will be visible in the area.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity.

Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
