Prescribed burn at Black Hill Conservation Park
Date posted: 20 Oct. 2026
A prescribed burn is planned at Black Hill Conservation Park in the Mount Lofty Ranges on Wednesday, 21 October, weather conditions permitting. The prescribed burn will start at 11:00am and is likely to be completed by 8:00pm. Flames and smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.
- The area to be burnt is 32.6 hectares across the southern slopes of the park.
- Aircraft will be used to help deliver and manage this burn.
- This is a landscape protection burn that will also promote the regeneration of habitat for endangered bird species, the chestnut-rumped heathwren.
- No roads will be closed throughout the burn.
- Smoke may drift across Black Hill Summit Track and Powerline Track.
- Smoke may be visible from Montacute Road
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.
NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity. Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
