Water allocations and announcements

A range of early advice is currently being provided for irrigators to help support businesses in South Australia.

This information provides greater support and help with forward planning and is especially important in years when water allocations are forecast to be less than 100 percent.

Preparing for the 2020-21 water year

Useful Information Events and Resources

This short ‘River Murray Water Resources and Allocations Update’ video explains the latest weather outlook and the likelihood of improvements to water availability as of 15 May 2020.

In addition, the South Australian Government is holding a ‘Water Fundamentals’ workshop via an online webinar on Wednesday 20 May from 12.30-2.30pm. Learn more about the event, or register here

If you missed the previous webinar for irrigators in April, you can catch up on the full session here with the SA Government Webinar Catch Up Video. If you don’t have time to watch the full webinar, the following shorter video topics provide snapshots of key information from that session.

South Australia’s River Murray Water Allocation Statement – updated 15 May 2020

South Australia’s River Murray Water Allocation Statement   for 15 May 2020 has been prepared to provide South Australian River Murray water users with information about water availability during 2020-21.

Since 15 April 2020, there has been significant rainfall over the southern Murray-Darling Basin, which has resulted in improved water availability. While storage volumes at the end of April 2020 remain relatively low, there is a high chance of significant improvements to water availability in the coming months, given recent rainfall events and a favourable rainfall outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology.

This latest Allocation Statement provides updated information on projected minimum opening allocations, private carryover, water held in Murray-Darling Basin Authority controlled storages, climate outlook and projections for irrigation water allocations under a range of scenarios. The Statement indicates that, for 2020-21, there is currently:

  • around a 95 percent likelihood that allocations will increase to 60 percent or higher by the end of the year; and
  • around a 70 percent likelihood that allocations will increase to 100 percent by the end of the year.

In thinking about water availability for 2020-21, irrigators are encouraged to take into account the full range of probability scenarios for potential allocation improvements (outlined in the Allocation Statement), rather than focusing solely on the projected worst case minimum of 8 per cent (based on storage levels at the end of April 2020).

The publication of River Murray Water Allocation Statements is part of the South Australian Government's commitment to giving greater support and more timely information to River Murray water users to help them in their forward planning.

Information confirming the actual water allocation that River Murray water entitlement holders will receive at the start of 2020-21 will be published on 15 June 2020. This will incorporate any improvements to the opening allocation for 2020-21, as a result of rainfall and inflows into storages during May 2020.
