You're invited to celebrate Para Wirra Conservation Park as park of the month in May.

With free park entry for the entire month, it is a wonderful time to explore the park and join in the numerous free events and activities.

What’s on

Ranger guided morning bird walk

Date and time:
Saturday 5 May, 7:00 am – 9:00 am

Bring along your binoculars and a sense of adventure as we go for an early morning ramble through some of Para Wirra’s beautiful woodland. Walk with the rangers to discover what birds can be found in the park and how to identify them by their calls and behaviour. Watch out for thornbills and treecreepers flitting between the trees and emus as they wander through the bush.

Meeting point: Para Wirra Central picnic area, Para Wirra Drive.

Come and try orienteering

Date and time:
Saturday 5 May, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

You are invited by Tintookies Orienteering Club to try out the new permanent orienteering courses at Para Wirra. Members of the club will be on hand to help you get started and free printed maps will be provided on the day. Course choices will provide something to suit all ability; very easy 1.1km, very easy 1.7km, easy 2.8km and moderate 3.1km.

If you are unable to be there on that day the courses will be available for you to do later. You can download the maps from Sunday 6th May.

Meeting point: Meet at the Helipad car park.

Art in the park

Here’s your chance to learn how to draw from nature with a local artist. Botanical illustrator Gilbert Dashorst will guide you through how to produce a piece of artwork that you can frame and hang on your wall.

Mother's Day picnic

Sunday 13 May, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm

Why not pack a picnic and head to the new Gawler View picnic area for a day filled with play, adventure and art. Making mum a mother’s day gift, go for a walk with the rangers, and discover the nature play forest.

Mother's Day ranger guided walk

Sunday 13 May, 10:30 am – 11:30 am and 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Join the rangers on one of our Mother’s Day guided family walks and discover the unusual rock formations of Lizard and Chimney Rock. Along the way the rangers will share their knowledge of the park.

Nature Detectives

Sunday 13 May, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Come on a family adventure and get to know some of the animals, plants and fungi of Para Wirra led by the Bush Classroom. Explore in and around the new nature play forest at Gawler View picnic area getting hands on in to nature!

Plant at the camp

Saturday 19 May, 11:00 am – 1:30 pm

Join the Friends of Para Wirra and the rangers on a planting day at the new camp ground. This is a great opportunity to support the work of the rangers and friends in revegetating the area and also see the new camp ground before it opens to the public.

Fungi and medicinal flora guided walk

Date and time:
Sunday 20 May, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Come along and learn about the life cycles of common fungi and native plants in Para Wirra with botanist and fungi enthusiast Bev Lane. Join us for an enlightening walk and talk amongst the Xanthorrhoea’s, the lichens and the mosses where Bev will share her vast knowledge. Keep your eyes peeled for jelly fungi, native boletes and mycelium in the undergrowth. Learn new identifying skills, interesting traits and medicinal and traditional properties for both fungi and plants.

Meeting point: Para Wirra Park Office and Resource Centre.

Ranger guided Grand South Para Hike

Date and time:
Tuesday 29 May, 9:30 am – 3:00 pm

Join the rangers on the new South Para Grand Hike. This hike takes in some of the best ‘must visit’ parts of the park with highlights including the Devils Nose, the lake and Lizard Rock. Along the way the rangers will share their knowledge of the park and provide helpful tips and advice for preparing for independent hikes.

Bowden's Cottage open days

Dates and times:
Tuesdays 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 May, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

As part of the History Month why not visit historic Bowden’s Cottage, a restored settler’s cottage in the heart of the Barossa Goldfields where gold was first discovered in 1868. Discover the Barossa’s gold mining history, explore gold mining displays.
