Famous for its geological landmarks such as Wilpena Pound and its Adnyamathanha culture, the park is one of South Australia’s must see travel destinations, located five-hours north of Adelaide.

As part of their Park of the Month celebrations, the region is also putting out a call for volunteer rangers to sign up for the park for work at various times of the year.

The Volunteer Ranger Program gives South Australians with an interest in the environment the opportunity to contribute to nature and wildlife conservation, all while enjoying the state’s iconic national parks.

Northern Flinders District Ranger Dave Phillips said volunteer rangers had a unique opportunity to help out behind-the-scenes in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.

“They not only assist with school holiday programs, assisting in the visitor’s centre, guided walks and facilities maintenance, but they can also help with wildlife surveys and monitoring,” he said.

Dave, who has worked in the park for the past 18-months, said Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park was a very unique and beautiful park.

“It provides visitors with a great opportunity to see the stunning natural beauty of the South Australian outback as well as the opportunity to experience Adnyamathanha culture,” he said.

“There is so much to see and do in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, you’ll need to make sure you plan to stay for a few days.

“There’s also many accommodation options within the park from camping in one of the 10 NPWS-run campgrounds, or if you’re looking for a little more luxury the Wilpena Pound Resort also has a campground with amenity blocks, cabins, glamping tents and motel rooms.”

This October NPWS is celebrating Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park as Park of the Month with a special program of activities hosted by the local park rangers and the Friends of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park volunteer group. Park of the Month activities include:

  • Guided walks
  • Tag-a-long driving tours
  • Aboriginal Cultural experiences
  • Pancake breakfast, barbecue lunches and morning/afternoon teas
