Sanctuary zones

Jet ski owners and riders should make themselves familiar with the restricted activities within sanctuary zones.

It is okay to travel through a sanctuary zone on a jet ski, but a person must not engage in motorised water sport.

Forms of motorsport include:

  • circle work, weaving, and jumping across waves, swell or wash
  • travelling at speeds greater than 35 knots (~65 km/hr).

Remember, fishing restrictions apply to all persons in sanctuary zones. Use this interactive map to explore sanctuary zones and find out more about South Australia’s marine parks.

Penalties apply if people do not adhere to restrictions.

Marine Mammals

Maintaining the legal distance from marine mammals (such as whales, dolphins and seals) is important, both for your safety and the safety of the animals.

Jet skis are required to keep a minimum of 300 metres from marine mammals at all times.
