A Crown lands licence allows a person or organisation the right to use a specified portion of Crown land for a specific purpose (i.e. installation of jetties, pump and pipelines and access).
A licence does not grant an exclusive right to the land and members of the public cannot be excluded from licensed Crown land. In some circumstances public access may be restricted in the interests of public safety.
How can I get a licence?
To apply for a licence, you will need to complete the Application for a licence over Crown land form.
Before any licence is issued, applications are assessed to determine if a licence is the appropriate tenure and that application criteria has been met.
How much does it cost?
A licence is subject to an application and an annual fee that is reviewed on a yearly basis. Contact us to find out about specific licence fees.
Can a licence be transferred?
Most Crown land licences are transferrable upon application and approval. Some licences to occupy Crown land are connected to privately owned land. When this land is sold, the licence is transferred with the land.
To apply for a licence to be transferred, you will need to complete the Application to transfer a Crown land licence form.

How can I amend my licence?
In some cases it is possible to amend an existing licence (i.e. change or add a purpose of a licence). To amend a licence, you will need to complete the Application to amend a licence form.
Include as much detail as possible about your request for an amendment. If development is proposed, you may also need to lodge a development application to the local council.
Can I purchase the land specified on my licence?
If you hold a licence over Crown land you may be eligible to surrender the licence in order to purchase a title to the land (known as freeholding or a fee simple title). You can only purchase land from a licence where significant authorised improvements have been made to the land.
To surrender your licence in order to purchase a title to the land, you will need to complete the Application to freehold a Crown licence form.
