Marine benthic flora of southern Australia, Part IIIB

Rhodophyta: Gracilariales, Rhodymeniales, Corallinales and Bonnemaisoniales.

Flora of Australia Supplementary Series 5

H.B.S. Womersley

Emeritus Professor Womersley had an outstanding international reputation for his research on the marine algae of southern Australian shores. He spent 40 years as a researcher and lecturer in phycology at the University of Adelaide, and in retirement has continued work in association with the State Herbarium of South Australia. He has published over 80 papers on marine algae, including substantial ecological and monographic accounts. His taxonomic work is being brought together in this book series. Given the difficulty of accurate identification of most of these plants, an extremely valuable feature of the work is the inclusion of detailed drawings of the vegetative and reproductive structures of each species, and inclusion of habit photographs of representative taxa. This is an essential reference work on an important group of organisms. It has relevance far beyond the shores of southern Australia.

Part I and II were issued by the SA Handbooks Committee and are long out-of-print. Parts IIIA and IIIB were published by the Australian Biological Resources Study, Canberra (ABRS). Part IIID was published jointly by the State Herbarium and ABRS. Contact CSIRO Publishing to purchase hardcopy of these volumes. Only Part IIIC can be purchased from the Board of the Botanic Gardens & State Herbarium. Scanned version of all volumes can be accessed here. The cooperation of ABRS to make this possible is greatfully acknowledged. The information from the book is also presented as species fact-sheets on the Electronic Flora of South Australia web-site (
