The Government of South Australia and City of Adelaide will reward and celebrate organisations and individuals who are playing their part and reducing the city’s carbon emissions.

The inaugural Carbon Neutral Adelaide Awards will celebrate and showcase the community leadership and active contribution of Carbon Neutral Adelaide Partners to the community’s shared aspiration for the City of Adelaide to become the world’s first carbon neutral city.

The Awards, to be held on Friday 17 November at the Adelaide Town Hall, offer a unique opportunity to build recognition for organisational achievements, inspire others and grow our City’s reputation as an international leader in environmental change.

All organisations and individuals using the City are encouraged to play their part to help make the City of Adelaide the world’s first carbon neutral city. To find out more and for details of the Awards visit

In 2015, the State Government and Adelaide City Council committed to a joint aspiration for Adelaide to be the world’s first carbon neutral city. We signed a sector agreement to formalise that collaboration, and released a shared vision document that outlined our direction and priorities for pursuing that goal.

The Carbon Neutral Adelaide Action Plan 2016-2021, identifies the importance of building community partnerships and defines the emissions reduction pathways that are required to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality throughout the Adelaide CBD, Park Lands and North Adelaide by 2025.

The Carbon Neutral Adelaide Awards are a shared initiative of the City of Adelaide and the Government of South Australia.

Nominations for the 2017 Carbon Neutral Adelaide Awards open this week and will close on 23 October.

The Awards will recognise the most exemplary achievements of Carbon Neutral Adelaide partners, including within organisations, supply chains, advocacy, professional endeavour and household practices as we embrace the transition to a low carbon economy.

The Carbon Neutral Adelaide Awards will incorporate the CitySwitch Green Office awards that has been successfully run in the city since 2008.

Community ownership and support is the foundation of Carbon Neutral Adelaide and these awards recognise those dynamic and innovative businesses and individuals whose commitment to sustainability has inspired and encouraged others to do the same.

We know that our cities play a key role in both the problem and the solution of climate change – as hot spots for carbon emissions, cities are also hot spots of grassroots low carbon leadership. Here in Adelaide we’ve seen innovative businesses and individuals recognising the opportunities that climate change brings, and have embraced this by taking powerful steps to lower their emissions.

South Australia has proudly been known for a number of firsts in climate action, from being the first Australian state to sign up to the Under2MOU initiative, the first jurisdiction to introduce climate change specific legislation, and the first to set the ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. These awards acknowledge those in the community that are also first to embrace change and are leading by example.

The Carbon Neutral Adelaide Awards will help us share and celebrate the stories of Adelaide’s leaders, early adopters, innovators, influencers and creators of new norms.

Through these awards, the City of Adelaide is proud to work with the State Government to reward climate change action that delivers environmental and economic benefits.

Providing leadership on climate change action is vital to our economic prosperity, as it helps develop international trade, investment and tourism opportunities through our clean, green reputation.

Becoming carbon neutral is both an environmental imperative and an economic opportunity and will showcase Adelaide as a leader in the global shift to a prosperous, low-carbon economy.

Partnerships with local businesses are essential to growing our city’s international reputation as a hub for clean and green industries while additionally reducing operating costs.

“The Carbon Neutral Adelaide awards are an opportunity to recognise all the great work of SA businesses that are commercialising the products and services of the future. These innovators and disruptors that take the early risks to monetise opportunities that will shortly be the norm should be celebrated. Resilient, future proofed economies need these kinds of creative doers.”

Quotes attributable to Jon Dee, Co-Founder and Managing Director, DoSomething

“It makes business sense to reduce carbon emissions. Utilising solar power and using less energy reduces business power bills. Helping other companies to lower their carbon emissions also creates business opportunities and new jobs. Showcasing these solutions at the Awards is important as it inspires other companies to take their own low carbon journey.”
