Ark on Eyre
There are numerous projects on Eyre Peninsula and the Far West
of South Australia which are working towards the conservation of
our native plants and animals. Conservation needs to occur across
the landscape if we are to maintain our biodiversity. This means
that corridors and linkages are important to allow the movement
of animals and plants, and for evolution to continue. Community
involvement is a key part of conserving our natural heritage. The
aims of Ark on Eyre are to raise community awareness and involvement
in conservation projects. These are achieved through newsletters,
information sheets, media releases, displays, environmental interpretation,
workshops and field days supporting the various conservation projects
in the region..

Catchment Care - North Adelaide and Barossa
Catchment Water Management Board (CWMB)
The Board funds three project officers who work with the community
on projects aimed at restoring the health of the catchment. The
'Catchment Care' ('Our Patch') officers work with community and
school groups to develop hands-on projects that address catchment
issues, such as restoring degraded waterways and improving biodiversity.
'Catchment Care' activities include weed removal and re-vegetation,
rubbish removal, educational walking trails and signage, water quality
monitoring, creating and maintaining habitats such as wetlands,
reintroduction and/or monitoring of native fauna, creek bank stabilisation
and photographic monitoring.
Catchment to Coast
The Our Patch Catchment to Coast officer is funded in conjunction
with the Torrens and Patawalonga Boards. The 'Catchment to Coast'
program encourages community management of coastal and near-coastal
areas of the catchment, and educates the community about the links
between the health of catchment areas and the health of the coastal
environment.
Urban Catchment Care
The Urban Catchment Care Officer works to support and encourage
community involvement in 'Watercare' activities in the urban areas
of the catchment. The officer is based at the City of Salisbury.

Catchment Water Management Boards (CWMB):
Arid Areas
The Arid Areas Catchment Water Management Board (CWMB) is a Statutory
Authority created under the Water Resources Act (SA) 1997 (the Act).
The Arid Areas CWMB has responsibility for water resource management
for an area covering all of the unincorporated lands of the State,
totalling 70% of the State's area.
The primary plan for the water resources of SA is the State Water
Plan.
Once a CWMB has been formed, it has three main functions. These
are to:
Prepare and implement a Catchment Water Management Plan for all
of the water resources in the Board's area. In the case of the Arid
Areas Catchment Water Management Board, these resources include
the South Australian portions of the Great Artesian, Eucla and Officer
Basins (groundwater), Lake Eyre Basin, upper Flinders Ranges, Gawler
Ranges and the Aboriginal Lands in the western part of South Australia.
Provide advice to the Minister for Water Resources and constituent
councils for the Board's area in relation to the management of water
resources in the Board's area.
Promote public awareness of the importance of the proper management
of the water resources in the Board's area and of the sustainable
use of those resources.
The Catchment Board is in its early stages of development. Look

SACSA Framework
The South Australian Curriculum, Standards and Accountability
(SACSA) Framework describes curriculum Key Ideas and Outcomes upon
which learners from birth to Year 12 can expect their education
to be built.
Key Ideas and Outcomes comprise the required elements of the curriculum
framework for all government schools and children's services. These
core elements provide the basis for educators to design detailed
learning and assessment programs which suit the needs of children
and students in their settings and which emphasise local priorities.
This recognises the contribution of local decision making in successful
learning while also ensuring that all learners have a common curriculum.

State of the Environment (SOE) Reporting Unit
The Environment Reporting Unit within the Department for Environment
and Heritage has developed an Environment Reporting web site that
provides access to a wide range of environmental information. The
information is organised under seven major themes: Atmosphere, Biodiversity,
Coasts and the Sea, Heritage, Human Settlements, Inland Waters and
Land Resources.
The web site provides access to the 2003 State of the Environment
Report for South Australia http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/soe2003.
The State of the Environment Report for South Australia 2003 provides
an objective assessment of the condition of South Australias
environment, the nature of the pressures upon it and current responses
to those pressures. It does this by reporting against a series of
environmental indicators for a broad range of issues and analysing,
where possible, the changes since previous State of the Environment
reports (1998, 1993 and 1988). The report also comments on the adequacy
of our responses and makes a series of recommendations on how we
can improve efforts to protect the environment.
The Environment Reporting web site also includes an Environmental
Data Inventory. This is a catalogue of over 130 environmental datasets
held by South Australian State Government agencies. The Inventory
is intended to be used as a first point of reference to locate environmental
data. Each record provides comprehensive information, or metadata,
about the dataset including its content, quality, geographic extent,
processing history and accuracy. Contact details are also provided
so that the relevant agency can be contacted for more information.

Stormwater Pollution Prevention
Projects
The Stormwater Pollution Prevention Projects aim to improve the
water quality in the Patawalonga, Torrens, Northern Adelaide and
Barossa and Onkaparinga Catchment Water Management Boards by reducing
the amount of pollution from entering the stormwater system.
These Boards have taken a leading role in environmental education
within South Australia by supporting the Stormwater Pollution Prevention
Projects (SPPPs) that are now operating across these Catchments.
The Projects have placed Stormwater Pollution Prevention Officers
in councils to address stormwater pollution issues at the local
level. Projects have been supported in various forms since January
1996.
The major focus of the Projects is with small to medium industries
and businesses not licensed by the Environment Protection Authority
(EPA) and mobile business operators. Project officers visit businesses,
provide background information, identify areas of concern and encourage
adoption of best management practices.
Apart from "face to face' visits newsletters, workshops and
the development of information are also undertaken to support this
work.
Local councils provide support to the project officers and they
link to other federal, state and local government programs such
as the EPA's Eco-efficiency Training Program and council's Local
Agenda 21 (LA21) Programs.
The Projects share a common goal to have all businesses 'complying'
with relevant environmental legislation using an integrated approach
of education and awareness and enforcement in the event of non-compliance.

Trees for Life
Trees For Life is a non-profit community organisation that encourages
SouthAustralians to take an active role in revegetation and bushland
management.Since 1981, over 23 million seedlings have been grown
for South Australian landholders and revegetation projects through
the Tree Scheme. The Direct Seeding program increases revegetation
efforts, and provides complimentary tubestock species to be planted
the following year amongst the new growth. Approximately 600 volunteer
bushcarers have been trained to work on over 280 sites of remnant
vegetation under the Bush For Life program.
As a landholder, you can:
- Order seedlings for planting on your property (we can find a
volunteer to raise the seedlings or, if you prefer, you can grow
your own)

Urban Forest Biodiversity Program
The UFBP coordinates biodiversity conservation planning and action
across metropolitan Adelaide. Linking and coordinating revegetation
and biodiversity enhancement projects with Local, State and Federal
Government Agencies, community groups, schools and service clubs.
The first priority of the program is the conservation of native
(indigenous) plants and animals.
It achieves this by identifying and restoring areas of high conservation
significance, facilitating on-ground projects and planning by community
groups, local councils, catchment boards and individuals. It also
provides educational training and resources to help raise awareness
of biodiversity issues within key industry sectors, all levels of
government and the wider community.
Education initiatives are under way with a hands-on, cross-curriculum
focus.
Teacher resources, school/classroom-based interactive workshops,
accredited training opportunities and grants for practical biodiversity
related projects available. Referenced with the SACSA framework.
http://www.urbanforest.on.net/
SA Urban Forests - One Million Trees Program (OMT)
The UFBP also delivers the SA Urban Forests - One Million Trees
Program that is able to build on 5 years of expertise in Best Practise
remnant vegetation protection carried out by the UFBP.
The OMT program is actively engaging local communities through
the planting of one million local native plants on public land across
the Adelaide metropolitan area. Over a 5 year period the plantings
will reinstate local native vegetation covering 1000 hectares to
enhance the biodiversity, sustainability and liveability of our
urban environment.
The OMT program is driven by a whole-of-government approach involving
three tiers of government working together with statutory bodies,
non-government organisations and the community to maximise environmental
outcomes. The program also provides opportunities for broad community
involvement, employment and training through supporting projects
such as the Youth Conservation Corps.

Established in June 1995, this Waterwatch program operates from
Port Gawler, to Moculta, Light Pass and Greenock of the Barossa.
The Northern Adelaide & Barossa Waterwatch program addresses
local community and catchment needs, by providing free, tailored,
information, training, workshops and tours, for a wide range of
audiences. The program also has a variety of ID charts, books, video's
and CD-ROM's, that are available for loan to schools and the general
public. These cover topics from local frog & fish identification,
to stormwater pollution, catchments, and the water cycle, and are
suitable for audiences from Grade 3 to adult.
Finally the program coordinates a series of comprehensive monitoring
programs for water quality, salinity, frogs, and aquatic fauna,
which provides valuable to data to local community groups, industry,
the Northern Adelaide & Barossa Catchment Water Management Board,
and the Environment Protection Authority.
