Ark on Eyre

There are numerous projects on Eyre Peninsula and the Far West of South Australia which are working towards the conservation of our native plants and animals. Conservation needs to occur across the landscape if we are to maintain our biodiversity. This means that corridors and linkages are important to allow the movement of animals and plants, and for evolution to continue. Community involvement is a key part of conserving our natural heritage. The aims of Ark on Eyre are to raise community awareness and involvement in conservation projects. These are achieved through newsletters, information sheets, media releases, displays, environmental interpretation, workshops and field days supporting the various conservation projects in the region..

Catchment Care - North Adelaide and Barossa Catchment Water Management Board (CWMB)

The Board funds three project officers who work with the community on projects aimed at restoring the health of the catchment. The 'Catchment Care' ('Our Patch') officers work with community and school groups to develop hands-on projects that address catchment issues, such as restoring degraded waterways and improving biodiversity.
'Catchment Care' activities include weed removal and re-vegetation, rubbish removal, educational walking trails and signage, water quality monitoring, creating and maintaining habitats such as wetlands, reintroduction and/or monitoring of native fauna, creek bank stabilisation and photographic monitoring.

Catchment to Coast
The Our Patch Catchment to Coast officer is funded in conjunction with the Torrens and Patawalonga Boards. The 'Catchment to Coast' program encourages community management of coastal and near-coastal areas of the catchment, and educates the community about the links between the health of catchment areas and the health of the coastal environment.

Urban Catchment Care
The Urban Catchment Care Officer works to support and encourage community involvement in 'Watercare' activities in the urban areas of the catchment. The officer is based at the City of Salisbury.

Barossa Catchment Care
The Barossa Catchment Care Officer works to support and encourage community involvement in 'Watercare' activities in the Barossa region of the catchment. The officer is based at the Angaston Offices of the Barossa Council.

Catchment Water Management Boards (CWMB): Arid Areas

The Arid Areas Catchment Water Management Board (CWMB) is a Statutory Authority created under the Water Resources Act (SA) 1997 (the Act). The Arid Areas CWMB has responsibility for water resource management for an area covering all of the unincorporated lands of the State, totalling 70% of the State's area.
The primary plan for the water resources of SA is the State Water Plan.
Once a CWMB has been formed, it has three main functions. These are to:
Prepare and implement a Catchment Water Management Plan for all of the water resources in the Board's area. In the case of the Arid Areas Catchment Water Management Board, these resources include the South Australian portions of the Great Artesian, Eucla and Officer Basins (groundwater), Lake Eyre Basin, upper Flinders Ranges, Gawler Ranges and the Aboriginal Lands in the western part of South Australia.
Provide advice to the Minister for Water Resources and constituent councils for the Board's area in relation to the management of water resources in the Board's area.
Promote public awareness of the importance of the proper management of the water resources in the Board's area and of the sustainable use of those resources.

Granite Island Nature Park Pty Ltd

Granite Island Nature Park operates a variety of environment education activities including school programs, guided penguin tours, below deck shark aquarium and ‘eco tourism’ programs.

Guided penguin tours operate all year round and are a comprehensive and enjoyable nature experience. Participants meander through the penguin colony on Granite Island with a tour guide to view Little Penguins. Tour groups are small to ensure a high quality experience. Trained Tour Guides provide an interactive and enjoyable experience, with up to 100 penguins seen during a tour. Guides will take visitors to view the penguins in their natural habitat to within five metres and interpret the biology, ecology, behaviours and adaptations of these charismatic creatures. Scientific research measuring the health of the colony and environmental management strategies implemented to benefit the penguins is interpreted to tour participants, which adds interest to the tour.

School programs, for both primary and secondary can be developed in combination with teachers to design tours and activities that achieve required learning outcomes. A two hour ‘eco tourism’ program and accompanying teacher resource pack has been developed for year 11,12 and University students. The program focuses on the penguins and the ‘eco tourism’ business as a case study.

Our Patch - Patawalonga and Torrens CWMBs

The 'Our Patch' Program is the key community involvement initiative of the Catchment Water Management Boards (CWMBs). It is aimed at providing the wider community with the opportunity to take positive steps toward the protection, rehabilitation and sustainable management of their catchments. The program offers technical, financial, in-kind and general support to groups, schools, industries and individuals within the community wanting to play an active role in reversing or preventing environmental degradation of their catchments. To date, the specific support offered by the program has included:

  • Identification of Patches in need of protection, restoration or remediation,
  • Formation and on-going support of Patch groups,
  • Development of action plans and the implementation of these through on-ground projects,
  • Educating groups about catchment management issues with particular emphasis on watercourses and the protection of remnant native vegetation in the riparian area and the use of local provenance native species in the restoration of riparian zones,
  • Educating groups or providing access to other relevant education programs in various management techniques used in environmental (catchment) management,
  • Funding Our Patch Grants, and
  • Identification of additional sources of assistance or resources.

Our Patch - Onkaparinga CWMB

Across the Onkaparinga Catchment area, members of the community are adopting patches of their local creek or river to protect and rehabilitate. A patch can be as small as a few metres or as large as several kilometres. Anyone and everyone can be involved in 'Our Patch' - individuals, families, groups of local residents, school communities, sporting and service clubs etc.
Through the 'Our Patch' program, eligible groups or individuals can access funding grants and professional advice, participate in workshops, and be a part of an established network of like-minded community members. The 'Our Patch' program can help by providing technical, financial, in-kind and general support to individuals and groups wishing to care for a patch of watercourse.
Trained 'Catchment Care' officers can assist in the following ways:

  • Identifying locations that need the help of an Our Patch group.
  • Assisting groups to put together an action plan.
  • Providing training in techniques used in environmental management.
  • Assisting groups to access funding for on-ground works and related activities.

Reefwatch

Reef Watch is a community monitoring program where recreational scuba divers and snorkellers gather data on the status of coastal reefs. Participants are provided with training to enable them to accurately identify and record reef plants, animals and fish. Reef Watch has also established a program called "Feral or in Peril" which enables divers and snorkellers to identify and report sightings of introduced marine pests and native species of conservation concern. An estuary monitoring program is also being established.

Reef Watch involves the input of many of South Australia's top marine scientists and educators along with the help of hundreds of volunteers. The data gathered by participants contributes to our understanding of marine ecosystems, thereby assisting in developing effective management strategies.

Reef Watch also undertakes a variety of community education activities aimed at increasing community awareness, understanding and involvement. These include community workshops and information sessions, a newsletter and an interactive website http://www.reefwatch.asn.au/

SACSA Framework

The South Australian Curriculum, Standards and Accountability (SACSA) Framework describes curriculum Key Ideas and Outcomes upon which learners from birth to Year 12 can expect their education to be built.
Key Ideas and Outcomes comprise the required elements of the curriculum framework for all government schools and children's services. These core elements provide the basis for educators to design detailed learning and assessment programs which suit the needs of children and students in their settings and which emphasise local priorities. This recognises the contribution of local decision making in successful learning while also ensuring that all learners have a common curriculum.

State of the Environment (SOE) Reporting Unit

The Environment Reporting Unit within the Department for Environment and Heritage has developed an Environment Reporting web site that provides access to a wide range of environmental information. The information is organised under seven major themes: Atmosphere, Biodiversity, Coasts and the Sea, Heritage, Human Settlements, Inland Waters and Land Resources.

The web site provides access to the 2003 State of the Environment Report for South Australia http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/soe2003. The State of the Environment Report for South Australia 2003 provides an objective assessment of the condition of South Australia’s environment, the nature of the pressures upon it and current responses to those pressures. It does this by reporting against a series of environmental indicators for a broad range of issues and analysing, where possible, the changes since previous State of the Environment reports (1998, 1993 and 1988). The report also comments on the adequacy of our responses and makes a series of recommendations on how we can improve efforts to protect the environment.

The Environment Reporting web site also includes an Environmental Data Inventory. This is a catalogue of over 130 environmental datasets held by South Australian State Government agencies. The Inventory is intended to be used as a first point of reference to locate environmental data. Each record provides comprehensive information, or metadata, about the dataset including its content, quality, geographic extent, processing history and accuracy. Contact details are also provided so that the relevant agency can be contacted for more information.

Stormwater Pollution Prevention Projects

The Stormwater Pollution Prevention Projects aim to improve the water quality in the Patawalonga, Torrens, Northern Adelaide and Barossa and Onkaparinga Catchment Water Management Boards by reducing the amount of pollution from entering the stormwater system.
These Boards have taken a leading role in environmental education within South Australia by supporting the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Projects (SPPPs) that are now operating across these Catchments. The Projects have placed Stormwater Pollution Prevention Officers in councils to address stormwater pollution issues at the local level. Projects have been supported in various forms since January 1996.
The major focus of the Projects is with small to medium industries and businesses not licensed by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and mobile business operators. Project officers visit businesses, provide background information, identify areas of concern and encourage adoption of best management practices.
Apart from "face to face' visits newsletters, workshops and the development of information are also undertaken to support this work.
Local councils provide supp
