Belair is perfect for family outings |
Belair National Park has important natural, cultural, historical and recreational values and is the birthplace of the national park system in South Australia. The park was dedicated in 1891, making it the first national park in South Australia.
The park lies within the Mitcham and Adelaide Hills council areas, and forms part of a chain of national park reserves located along the Adelaide Hills Face Zone. The park is a part of our Southern Lofty District, which comprises 21 parks. It has become the gateway to other national park reserves in the state, as it is often the first port of call for many of the 250,000 local, interstate and overseas visitors who come here each year.
Belair National Park is just 13 km from the Adelaide City centre.

The Department for Environment and Heritage is making significant improvement to visitor facilities in Belair National Park. In 2006, upgrading of the entry precinct was proposed. After considering the extensive community feedback, a revised proposal has been developed for further consultation. It is anticipated the new entry precinct will be ready by July 2010 and will feature:
The existing park entry point on Upper Sturt Road will remain where it is. A traffic study undertaken in collaboration with the City of Mitcham and Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure determined that this was the most appropriate location for the park entry.
Inside the park, a new entry route will initially follow the current road before it veers off to a new entry station that will be built about 50 metres from the existing information centre, on the site of an old tennis court. This relocation will improve traffic flow during busy times.
A new purpose built entry station will combine the roles of the ticket sales and park information office. The entry station will also be open longer improving security for our visitors.
Safety for park visitors will be improved through small changes to the road alignment and with the creation of a T-junction near the popular Gums Oval precinct. Cars will need to stop and look for pedestrians before passing by this busy area.
