Education is an important part of environmental care in South Australia. Environmental education fosters positive attitudes and behaviour, and it enables us all to make sound decisions in the environment.
The State has a strong cultural heritage and a rich and diverse natural environment. To conserve and sustain these we conduct wide-ranging programs for all sectors of the community. These programs assist South Australians to explore and learn about the natural environment by visiting the State's network of fine parks, and they encourage people to help conserve land and wildlife by participating in local community groups.
We have available a range of educational materials on heritage, biodiversity and park subjects. These include books, park brochures and publications, trail guides, wildlife booklets, maps, reports and posters. Regularly updated, they can be obtained from information centres located at many of the more popular parks.
We work with many community groups to encourage care for the local environment. This is done by organising educational activities such as field days, shows, displays, field trips, public presentations and seminars and by helping produce literature, and stories for the media.
A popular fun part of our service is the program of tours and activities in parks. During the spring and summer months parks in the Flinders Ranges, Riverland and Kangaroo Island provide special activities including guided walks, birdwatching tours, geological tours and visits to special historic and Aboriginal sites. These activities are open to all.
Community groups with which we work include wildlife clubs, landcare groups, local action associations and bodies such as Greening Australia and Wetland Care.
Environmental education forms part of many courses taught in schools and higher education institutions, ensuring up-to-date environmental information is available to students and teachers.
Services we provide include:
