Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park

Ancient and rugged mountain landscapes, peaceful tree-lined gorges and a seasonal wealth of wildlife. The sense of space unique to the semi-arid zone combine to make Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park one of South Australia’s iconic destinations.

The park comprises approximately 95,000 hectares. It includes the Heysen Range, Brachina and Bunyeroo gorges and the vast amphitheatre of mountains that is Ikara Wilpena Pound. Experience the native wildlife, rich cultural heritage, impressive geological features, camping opportunities and a range of activities including bushwalking, four-wheel driving, birdwatching, photography and mountain biking.

We're working to improve this park with upgraded facilities at Akurra Adnya Arkaroo Rock and in the future, at other locations such as the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail.

  • Acraman campground

    Nes­tled between two moun­tain ranges, this small camp­ground sur­round­ed by native pine trees is a short walk from Bun­yeroo Gorge. The camp­ground has 4 allo­cat­ed camp­sites and is acces­si­ble by high clear­ance 2WD.

    Access: 2WD high clear­ance and 4WD.
    Suit­able for: tents, camper trailers.
    Facil­i­ties: long-drop toilet.
    Camp­fires: allowed (sea­son­al fire restric­tions apply).
    Num­ber of camp­sites: 4 allo­cat­ed campsites.

  • Aroona campground

    Locat­ed at the north­ern-most point of the park, this camp­ground is the start­ing point for sev­er­al loop walks. The camp­ground is on the edge of the Aroona Creek between two moun­tain ranges. The Hey­sen Trail runs close to this camp­ground. The camp­ground has 13 allo­cat­ed camp sites and is acces­si­ble by 4WD.

    Access: 2WD high clear­ance and 4WD.
    Suit­able for: tents, camper trail­ers, caravans.
    Facil­i­ties: long-drop toi­let, bush camp­ing, bus parking.

  • Brachina East Campground

    This camp­ground offers two dif­fer­ent camp­ing expe­ri­ences on the banks of Brachi­na Creek and Aroona Creek.

    Access: var­i­ous camp­sites are 4WD only.
    Suit­able for: tents, camper trail­ers, select­ed sites suit­able for caravans.
    Facil­i­ties: long drop toi­let, fire pits.
    Camp­fires: allowed (sea­son­al fire restric­tions apply).

  • Cambrian Campground

    Between the Hey­sen and ABC Ranges at the north­ern end of the Bun­yeroo Road, this camp­ground is sur­round­ed by native pine trees inter­spersed with riv­er red gums along the creek line.

    Access: 2WD and 4WD.
    Suit­able for: tents, camper trail­ers and caravans.
    Facilities:long drop toilet.
    Camp­fires: Firepits (sea­son­al fire restric­tions apply).

  • Dingley Dell Campground

    Set into the curve of the Ora­parin­na Creek with a dra­mat­ic cliff-face on the oppo­site side of the riv­er red gum-lined creek. The near­by Per­awurtina Cul­tur­al Her­itage site is pop­u­lar for its Adnya­math­anha rock carv­ings. This camp­ground has shared firepits and lim­it­ed shading.

    Access: 2WD and 4WD.
    Suit­able for: car­a­van, camper trail­er, tent.
    Facil­i­ties: long-drop toilet.

  • Koolamon Campground

    Sit­u­at­ed on Aroona Creek at the base of the ABC Range this camp­ground offers stun­ning views of the land­scape that inspired artist Sir Hans Hey­sen. The 4WD sec­tion is sur­round­ed by riv­er red gums and aca­cias. There is a small area for 2WD vehi­cles. This camp­ground pro­vides min­i­mal shade and shared firepits and bbq plates.

    Access: Select­ed camp­sites are 4WD only.

  • Teamsters Campground

    This camp­ground sits high on the cliffs of the Brachi­na Creek, near to where it flows onto the plains, on its way to Lake Tor­rens. Exam­ples of fos­sil worm bur­rows and Wilka­w­il­l­i­na lime­stone fos­sils can be found near­by. This camp­ground has shared firepits with bbq plates, an area for bus park­ing and lim­it­ed shade.

    Access: 2WD, select­ed sites are 4WD only.
    Suit­able for: bus, car­a­vans, camper trail­ers, tents.
    Facil­i­ties: long-drop toilet.

  • Trezona Campground

    This peace­ful camp­ground along Brachi­na Gorge Road is ide­al­ly locat­ed for sev­er­al loop walks. The camp­ground is a short walk from the inter­na­tion­al­ly-sig­nif­i­cant geo­log­i­cal Edi­acaran Gold­en Spike.

    Access: 2WD and 4WD.
    Suit­able for: tents, camper trail­ers, caravans.
    Facil­i­ties: long-drop toi­let, pic­nic area.
    Camp­fires: allowed (sea­son­al fire restric­tions apply).
    Num­ber of camp­sites: 15 allo­cat­ed campsites.

  • Wilcolo Hikers only

    Locat­ed along the North­ern of South Aus­trali­a’s Hey­sen Trail, this camp­ground is nes­tled between native pine and the East­ern side wall of the Pound. St Mary’s Peak offers a spec­tac­u­lar back­ground. Ide­al­ly sit­u­at­ed for walk­ers using the Hey­sen Trail and for cyclists on the Maw­son Trail or Flinders Ranges by Bike loop trail. Also as a remote camp for school groups.

    No vehi­cle access.
    Suit­able for tents only.
    Facil­i­ties: long drop toi­let, rain water tank.
    Camp­fires: Not per­mit­ted at any­time of the year. Camp stoves per­mit­ted for hik­ers and cyclists only.
    Num­ber of hikers/​cyclists: Up to 50.

  • Youngoona Campground

    This camp­ground is locat­ed at the east­ern end of the Brachi­na Gorge Road, where Ora­parin­na Creek joins the Eno­ra­ma Creek. Var­i­ous camp sites offer part shade.

    Suit­able for: tents, camper trail­ers, caravans.
    Facil­i­ties: nil.
