Adelaide Park Lands and City Squares heritage assessment

In 2009 the South Australian Heritage Council received two nominations relating to the Adelaide Park Lands (including Brougham, Palmer and Roberts Gardens, Hindmarsh, Hurtle, Light, Victoria, Wellington and Whitmore Squares) for state heritage listing.

DEWNR’s Heritage SA is commissioning a comprehensive assessment of the heritage values of the Adelaide Park Lands and City Squares as a landscape of cultural heritage significance, informed by historical research and a physical inspection. It should be noted that the Institutional Precinct along the north side of North Terrace and Aboriginal heritage values are excluded from this assessment project.

In assessing the Adelaide Park Lands and City Squares, rigorous assessment against the criteria under the Heritage Places Act 1993 will be required. This assessment process is to ensure that the Adelaide Park Lands and City Squares are of state heritage significance before consideration by the Heritage Council for entry in the South Australia Heritage Register as a State Heritage Place or possibly designation as a State Heritage Area.

Contractor appointed to undertake heritage assessment

DEWNR has appointed DASH Architects, in association with Dr Peter Bell, to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the Adelaide Parks Lands and City Squares for heritage significance under Section 16(1) of the Heritage Places Act 1993.

It is anticipated the contractor will provide a final heritage assessment report on the Adelaide Parks Lands and City Squares by the end of August 2017.
