About Aerial Flight Line
Diagrams
The Aerial Flight Line Diagrams are a graphical representation
on a map of the aircrafts flight paths or runs and the approximate
position of each frame of photography taken.
Information provided on Diagrams
| |
Film Number or Survey Number
A unique identifying number assigned to each aerial photography
survey taken over South Australia.
|
| |
|
| |
Frame Number
Individual frames numbers within each survey. Depending on
the base map scale used, the numbering formats of these frames
can vary from individual frames numbers to every second or
every fifth frame.
|
| |
|
| |
Date of photography
Date the aerial photography was taken, shown as month and
year only. Time and day for individual frames is available
on request.

Camera type
Type of Camera used, please visit the Camera
Types page. For camera Calibrations certificates

| |
|
| |
Flying height
The height at which the aerial photography was taken expressed
as a mean height above ground level.
Depending on the survey date this measurement is expressed
in either feet or metres.
|
| |
|
| |
Focal length
Two most commonly used standard camera lenses:
Super Wide Angle (SWA) lens with a focal length of 88mm was
used for the 1:80,000 scale aerial photography programs.
All other programs utilized a Wide Angle (WA) lens with a
focal length of 152mm.
|
| |
|
| |
Percentage overlap
Forward overlap of each frame of photography taken during
the Survey, the standard is 60% but this may vary.
|
| |
|
| |
Scale of photography
Taken as a mean Scale above ground level.
Photographic scales commonly used:

Film type
The majority of photography taken before the 1970's is in
black and white with colour and colour infrared emerging in
the late 1970's.
Please note: Mapland is currently undertaking an aerial scanning
program to allow for electronic viewing of this photography.
As this will be a long process much of the early imagery is
still only available as hard copy prints and can only be viewed
at Mapland.

Base maps
Aerial Flight Line Diagrams have been drafted onto several base
map scales.
If the aerial photography taken does not cover a complete map sheet
only the portion of the Aerial Flight Line Diagram showing the flight
paths is displayed.
| |
1949 to approximately 1970:
|
| |
1:100 000 base maps were used, subdivided into north and
south sheets.
Selection of this photography is by the 1:100 000 name, number
only.
|
| |
|
| |
Approximately 1970 onwards: |
| |
Both 1:100 000 and 1: 250 000 map bases were used, selection
being dependent on the scale of photography being taken and
area to be covered . The use of 1:100 000 base maps was limited
to areas covering major country towns and the greater metropolitan
Adelaide.
For example : Adelaide 1 with a base map scale of 1: 250
000 and Adelaide 1with a base map scale 1:100 000 contain
information from different surveys.
Selection of the majority of this photography is by the 1:250
000 sheet name only.
|
| |
|
| |
Version Numbers |
| |
As more photography is taken over an area the new flight
paths are added to an existing Aerial Flight Line Diagram.
When flight paths overlap or the Aerial Flight Line Diagram
becomes too cluttered with information, the same Base Map
may be used however a new Version Number is generated.
For example the Central Block over Adelaide using the 1:250
000 Base Map Scale currently has more than 70 Versions of
Flight Line Diagrams available.
As a general guide, the lower the Version Number the earlier
the photography.

Aerial Flight Line Diagram
Selection
To find the available Aerial Flight Line Diagram please follow
the instructions below.
Please note:
- Not all Aerial Flight Line Diagrams, especially pre 1970,
are currently available. This archive will be added to over
time.
|
- When using the 1:100 000 map as your preferred selection,
please be aware the 1; 100 000 sheets may have been further
subdivided into North & South sheets and the names on
diagrams displayed may be different to what was originally
selected.
|
The diagrams selection is based on the 1:250 000 and 1:100 000
map divisions.
