The Save the River Murray Levy was abolished on 1 July 2015, providing most households and businesses with an annual saving of more than $40 and $182 respectively. The decision was in recognition that the original purpose of the Fund, to allow South Australia to lead the campaign to Save the River Murray, has been achieved.

Originally introduced in October 2003, the levy funded works and measures to improve the health of the river in South Australia.

During that time, the Save the River Murray Levy provided an essential contribution to works and measures that addressed the health of the River Murray in South Australia and increased community demands for secure, good quality water for irrigation and urban use.

The works and measures the Levy has contributed to will continue and will now be funded by State Appropriation.
