150th Anniversary - completion date 1858

    former Robe and Willunga Telegraph Stations (150Kb PDF) - Robe and Willunga (respectively)
    These buildings were two of the (five) original Telegraph Repeater Stations built in South Australia as part of Australia’s first intercolonial telegraph, which linked Adelaide and Melbourne.

    Cape Borda Lighthouse Complex (200Kb PDF) - Cape Borda (Kangaroo Island)
    This is the third lighthouse built in South Australia and the second oldest square lighthouse in Australia.  It is a maritime landmark at the western entrance to Investigator Strait.

    Hope Cottage (100Kb PDF) - Kingscote (Kangaroo Island)
    ‘Hope’ Cottage was one of three cottages (with ‘Faith’ and ‘Charity’) built by the Calnan family, who were one of the founders of Kangaroo Island’s pastoral and farming industries.

    B Division Cell Block (350Kb PDF) - Yatala Labour Prison
    B Division cell block at Yatala Labour Prison represents a significant phase in South Australia’s penal management history.  It is associated with the introduction of the sentence of ‘hard labour’ and also with the system of accommodating prisoners in separate cells.

    St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Cathedral (200Kb PDF) - Wakefield Street, Adelaide
    St Francis Xavier’s is the principal church of South Australia’s Catholic Community and is closely associated with the life and work of Bishop Francis Murphy, who is buried in the sanctuary.

    former Taylor & Forgie’s Workshop (100Kb PDF) - Gawler
    Taylor and Forgie’s was Gawler’s leading carpenter and builder in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

    Harveys Return Cemetery (200Kb PDF) - Flinders Chase National Park (Kangaroo Island)
    Captain Woodward, the first head keeper at Cape Borda Lighthouse, died on 13 September 1858 and was the first person buried at this site.

    Primrose Cottage (150Kb PDF) - Kersbrook (Adelaide Hills)
    This timber-slab cottage was the first dwelling constructed in Kersbrook after the town was laid out in 1858.

    Shady Grove Unitarian Church & Cemetery (150Kb PDF) - near Hahndorf
    Shady Grove is the only surviving nineteenth century Unitarian Church in South Australia.

    Morphett’s Pumphouse (650Kb PDF) - within the Burra State Heritage Area
    This restored building, now a museum and interpretive centre, originally housed an 80-inch diameter Cornish Beam Engine used at the Burra Mine.

    former Flour Mill (300Kb PDF) - within the Mintaro State Heritage Area
    The restored remains of this flour mill are a tangible reminder of Mintaro’s role as an agriculture and service centre.

    Blanchewater Homestead - off the Strzelecki Track
    Blanchewater Homestead was, at one time, a head station of the Beltana Pastoral Company and, during the 1880s, was nationally renowned for the breeding and breaking of horses.

125th Anniversary - completion date 1883

    Point Lowly Lighthouse Complex (300Kb PDF) - Point Lowly, via Whyalla
    Point Lowly Lighthouse (extended in 1908) is a rare example of a lighthouse tower constructed of both stone and concrete.

    Sunnybrae Farm Complex (150Kb PDF) - Regency Park
    This complex, the former farm of the Islington Sewage Works, is associated with one of nineteenth century South Australia’s most important public health initiatives – the construction of a water-borne sewage system.

    former Powder Magazines and Surrounding Walls (150Kb PDF) - Gaol Road, Adelaide
    These two explosives magazines are the only remaining powder magazines in the Adelaide City precinct.

    former Magazine Keeper’s Residence (150Kb PDF) - Gaol Road, Adelaide
    This complex was built at the same time as (1883), and adjacent to, Adelaide’s Powder Magazines and is a rare example of on-site accommodation for a magazine keeper.

    Newmarket Hotel (200Kb PDF) - West Terrace, Adelaide
    The Newmarket Hotel, on the corner of North and West Terraces, is a landmark building indicative of Adelaide’s prosperity during the 1880s and is associated with one of the West End’s most colourful characters – ‘Bert’ Edwards.

    St Vigeans Estate and Garden (250Kb PDF) - Stirling
    St Vigeans was designed and built by Edward Charles Stirling, who contributed significantly to political, medical and scientific developments in South Australia.  The extensive gardens were recognised world-wide, especially for the displays of rhododendrons.

    former Ostrich Farm (200Kb PDF) - Emeroo Station, via Stirling North
    This ostrich farm, east of Port Augusta, was South Australia’s most successful ostrich farming venture and is indicative of the Colonial Government’s eagerness to encourage economically viable pastoral industries in arid lands.

    Head Keeper’s Cottage and Main Gates & Walling (150Kb PDF) - Adelaide Zoo
    The Head Keeper’s Cottage and the Frome Road Gates & Walls are the Adelaide Zoo’s oldest surviving structures.

    ‘The Marines’ (100Kb PDF) - The Esplanade, Grange
    This eight-dwelling, three-storey terrace is a landmark on the Grange foreshore and is associated with the establishment of the suburb.

    Burra Railway Station (200Kb PDF) - within the Burra State Heritage Area
    The present 1883 station building replaced a wood and iron structure built when the northern railway reached Burra in 1870.  By the time the current station was constructed, the Burra line had been extended via Terowie and Peterborough to Quorn, thus connecting to the Great Northern Line to Farina.

    Cordillo Downs Homestead and Woolshed - Cordillo Downs Station, via Innamincka
    Cordillo Downs is one of South Australia’s enduring outback pastoral properties and for more than 60 years produced tonnes of quality wool for world markets.

    View first (3.2Mb PDF) and second (3Mb PDF) interpretive panels installed at Cordillo Downs as part of the Outback Interpretation Project of 2004.

100th Anniversary - completion date 1908

    former MTT No. 1 Converter Station (200Kb PDF) - East Terrace, Adelaide
    As the most substantial converter station for Adelaide’s electric tram network, this building is closely associated with the history of public transport in South Australia.

    ‘Boy & Serpent’ Fountain (350Kb PDF) - Adelaide Botanic Garden
    This fountain, donated to the Adelaide Botanic Garden by Adelaide philanthropist Robert Barr-Smith, was manufactured by the Coalbrookdale Company in England and is one of only two remaining examples of this pattern worldwide.

    former Moonta Railway Station (200Kb PDF) - within the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area
    This building, which replaced an earlier wooden station building, is now a tourist information shop for the Moonta Branch of the National Trust and an important landmark within the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area.
