Visiting Beltana State Heritage Area
|
|
| Presbyterian Manse, Beltana SHA |
The far north town of Beltana is a nine-kilometre detour off the
Hawker to Leigh Creek Road (signposted at the Beltana Roadhouse).
It has the feeling of a ghost town, but does have a few permanent
residents whose privacy should be respected.
A comprehensive walking trail brochure
and 14 interpretive signs
encourage visitors to spend a few hours exploring what remains of
this once bustling settlement. There are no accommodation, dining
or supply facilities available for travellers.
The ruins of the former Sliding Rock Mine (Cadnia) are approximately
a 20-kilometre drive west of Beltana. This spectacular State Heritage
Place is now part of the privately run Warraweena
Sanctuary, which offers accommodation in the homestead and shearing
quarters, or at camping areas around the property.
