Overview

South Australia's 17 State Heritage Areas are a diverse group of places representing unique aspects of the State's natural and cultural heritage. Some are recognised for their architectural merits, layout or contributions to South Australia's development, while others are predominantly natural areas of scenic or geological importance. No two State Heritage Areas are alike, differing not only in significance and contribution to South Australia's historical story, but also in terms of size and location across the State.

These highly significant Areas range from Innamincka (Cooper Creek), the Arckaringa Hills and Beltana in the north to Penola, Mount Gambier and Mount Schank in the south-east. State Heritage Areas are also located at the mid-north towns of Burra and Mintaro, the Moonta Mines site in Yorke Peninsula's Copper Triangle, and the river port of Goolwa. Closer to Adelaide are the Hills towns of Hahndorf and Mount Torrens, the southern suburb of Colonel Light Gardens and historic precincts within metropolitan Port Adelaide and Gawler.
