Competition Framework
The Schools Heritage Competition is an annual Department for Environment and Heritage event open to all Reception – Year 12 students across the State. It provides opportunities for classes to link school curricula to meaningful projects that showcase their local community, history and built heritage.
The 2008 theme, Interpreting Heritage Places, encourages students to consider the concept of ‘interpretation’ and the variety of ways in which the stories and messages of heritage places can be shared with others.
This year’s competition builds on the success of previous themes and formats and offers three different category and prize strands, each focussing on a distinctive style of interpretation, having separate criteria and offering diverse incentives.
The On-site Interpretation to Enhance Visitor Experiences strand is an exciting new opportunity for students to contribute to the protection and promotion of heritage places through the development of an interpretive product that enhances visitor experiences and raises their awareness of the stories and significance of the site. It offers this year’s major prize – funding up to $5000 and the opportunity to work with professional interpreters.
The other two strands (Electronic Interpretation and Interpretation through Television) reflect the format of previous Schools Heritage Competitions and provide opportunities for students to apply modern information and communication technologies (ICT) to showcase heritage places. The Electronic Interpretation category follows the original Competition format and invites students to develop PowerPoint presentations, websites and DVDs/Movies that showcase heritage places. The Interpretation through Television category is about showcasing places through oral interpretation and film-making. It reflects the ‘Postcards’ theme of 2007 and offers the experiential prize of working with the Channel 9 Postcards production team.
As in previous years (2003,
2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007) a package of materials outlining the competition rationale, criteria, prizes and timeline, as well as offering suggestions for interpreting the 2008 theme, has been forwarded to all schools. View the
