Competition Framework
The theme for the 2007 Schools Heritage Competition, HERITAGE
POSTCARDS: showcasing local places, was announced in early May
by the Minister for Environment and Conservation,
Hon. Gail Gago, MLC.
The Schools Heritage Competition is an annual event open to all
Reception - Year 12 students across the State. It provides opportunities
for classes to link school curricula to meaningful ICT projects
that showcase their local community, history and built heritage.
The 2007 theme encouraged classes to use computer technologies
to showcase their local places, using either the Channel 9
Postcards format (TV segments, website or printed materials)
or by developing a series of traditional or electronic postcards.
An exciting aspect of the 2007 competition was the creation of
a special prize - the Postcards Award - which offered students
the unique opportunity to develop their original idea as a segment
for the show.
As in previous years (2003,
2004, 2005
and 2006) the type of entry
was restricted to electronic format, to encourage the application
of modern technology in a celebration of heritage.
A package of materials outlining the competition rationale and
assessment criteria, and offering suggestions for interpreting the
2007 theme, was distributed to all schools in early May. View the

Entries & Judging
In total, 61 individual entries were received, representing a mix
of R-12 schools and classes across the State. The variety of entry
topics, styles and formats reflected diverse learning experiences
in schools, and indicated the range of heritage education programs
that had been successfully developed for the 2007 theme, HERITAGE
POSTCARDS: showcasing local places.
The projects submitted also highlighted the diversity of ICT (Information
Communication Technologies) skills being taught in schools. Students
produced movies and DVDs, developed PowerPoint presentations and
websites, scanned individual artwork and used programs such as Word,
Publisher, Photostory and image manipulation software. Some classes
participated in field trips, others conducted interviews, listened
to guest speakers or researched family or community histories.
Many participating teachers have confirmed the diversity of learning
experiences that resulted from participation in this competition
and its relevance to curriculum objectives across all year levels
R-12.
The quality of entries, in terms of both content and ICT capabilities,
complicated the judges' task of selecting just two winning entries
in each category. As a result, they declared additional awards for
some year levels.

The Postcards Award
In a partnership with Channel 9's tourism and lifestyle program,
Postcards,
this year's competition offered this exciting new prize category.
The Postcards Award provided the winning students with the
unique opportunity of working with Postcards' production
team to develop their original concept as a segment for the TV show.
As with the other prize categories, the judges for this award found
choosing just one winner a difficult task. As a result, they nominated
two equal winners and also an Honourable Mention.
The Teaching Heritage Award
In 2006 this award was introduced to recognise an outstanding class
program related to the Schools Heritage Competition theme. It highlights
the range of educational outcomes associated with participation
in the competition and acknowledges the educational process, rather
than the final product.
For 2007 the Teaching Heritage Award was expanded to include
both a primary and a secondary school program.
