Competition Framework

The theme for the 2006 Schools Heritage Competition, HERITAGE CONNECTIONS: links with our past, was announced in early April by the Minister for Environment and Conservation, Hon. Gail Gago, MLC.

The Schools Heritage Competition is an annual event open to all Reception - Year 10 students across the State. It provides opportunities for classes to link school curricula to meaningful ICT projects that showcase their local community, history and built heritage.

The 2006 theme encouraged classes to explore the connections that heritage places have with people, events or other places. It was anticipated that students would utilise a variety of community resources, such as local reference and photographic collections, but that they would also value their own associations with a place and appreciate the memories of family and community members.

As in previous years (2003, 2004 and 2005) the format of entries was restricted to those generated by computer, to encourage the application of modern technology in a celebration of heritage.

A package of materials outlining the competition rationale and assessment criteria, and offering suggestions for interpreting the 2006 theme, was distributed to all schools in early April. Awards Ceremony

On 31 October 2006 Dr Judith Brine, Deputy Chair of the South Australian Heritage Council, presented prizes and certificates to the winners of this year's competition.

The ceremony was held at the State heritage-listed Sunnybrae Farm at Regency Park. It included the viewing of all winning entries and a short presentation by recipients of Most Outstanding Entry categories and also the inaugural Teaching Heritage Award.
