Competition Framework
The inaugural 2003 competition was offered to all primary students,
with Year 3-5 and Year 6-7 categories. With the theme HERITAGE
CONSERVATION - a future for our past, it related directly to
the work of the Heritage Branch.
It also allowed for a wide choice of interpretation by students
and linked specifically with Essential Learnings within the SACSA
Framework.
The format for entries was restricted to those generated by computer,
to link with the teaching of Information and Computer Technologies
in schools and to encourage the application of modern media in a
celebration of heritage. The actual style of presentation - for
example PowerPoint, webpage, Word, iMovie - was completely open.
In March 2003 a package of materials outlining the aims of the
competition and criteria for assessment was distributed to all primary
schools. The flyer (550Kb
PDF) and supplementary
notes (50Kb PDF) provide additional
information.
Entries
Entry registrations were received from 35 groups, representing
25 schools. They reflected a mix of age ranges (years 2-7) and schools
- country and metropolitan, small and large, public and private,
heritage areas and new housing estates.
In all, 72 individual entries were received (32 in the Year 3-5
category and 40 for Year 6-7). Formats included PowerPoint, iMovie,
Publisher, Word documents, Media Player & web pages, and covered
such topics as tourism, interpretation, local issues and use &
adaptation of heritage places.
The quality of entries prompted judges to deviate from the original
plan of one overall winner in each category, with the creation of
additional prizes - two Commendation Awards and two or three Merit
Awards per age group.
Awards Ceremony
On 2 July 2003 the Minister for Environment and Conservation,
John Hill, presented prizes and certificates to the winners of the
inaugural Schools Heritage Competition. The ceremony, which included
an opportunity for guests to view the winning entries, was held
at the State heritage-listed Education Development Centre at Hindmarsh.
