Aboriginal heritage

Contact the Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division of the Department of Premier and Cabinet

Built heritage

Legislation regarding places of State significance is administered by the Heritage Branch of the Department for Environment and Heritage http://www.heritage.sa.gov.au

Documentary and other records (Archives)

State Records of South Australia manages State and Local government records http://www.archives.sa.gov.au

The National Archives of Australia manages Commonwealth records and has a State Office http://www.naa.gov.au

The National Library of Australia holds some significant South Australian material including oral history recordings http://www.nla.gov.au

The State Library of South Australia collects non-government personal and organisational records, as well as all publications produced in South Australia http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au

Other Specialist Archives in South Australia include the Adelaide City Archives http://www.adelaide.sa.gov.au/archives/, the Lutheran Archives and Research Centre and the Adelaide Catholic Archives http://www.adelaide.catholic.org.au/Services/Archives/default.htm.

Folklife heritage

The peak body in South Australia is the Folk Federation of SA http://www.folk-sa.asn.au/index.htm and the State Library of South Australia has an extensive oral history collection which includes folk material http://www.catalog.slsa.sa.gov.au:1083/screens/opacmenu.html

Geological, Archaeological, Palaeontological and Speleological heritage

Contact the Heritage Branch of the Department for Environment and Heritage for information regarding protection of geological, archaeological, palaeontological (fossil) and speleological (cave) heritage http://www.heritage.sa.gov.au

Commonwealth laws protect the export of specimens such as fossils and archaeological objects http://www.deh.gov.au/heritage/movable

Maritime heritage

Contact the Heritage Branch of the Department for Environment and Heritage, which manages sites in both State and Commonwealth waters http://www.heritage.sa.gov.au.

Movable heritage

Movable cultural heritage (ie historic objects) can be protected at both the Commonwealth http://www.deh.gov.au/heritage/movable and State levels.

South Australian legislation can protect objects which are judged to be 'intrinsically related to the heritage significance' of State Heritage Places or Areas. Contact the Heritage Branch of the Department for Environment and Heritagehttp://www.heritage.sa.gov.au

Many movable objects are housed in museums. Government-owned museums include those managed by the History Trust of South Australia http://www.history.sa.gov.au and the South Australian Museum, which deals with natural and Aboriginal history http://www.samuseum.sa.gov.au. Volunteer-run museums and private museums, along with government museums, are listed on Collections Australia Network http://www.collectionsaustralia.net/

Some significant objects have also been recorded (although not protected) on the BankSA Heritage Icons List, compiled by the National Trust of South Australia from 2001-2006 http://www.nationaltrustsa.org.au

Natural heritage

Natural heritage conservation is managed by a considerable number of bodies, including the Department for Environment and Heritage http://www.parks.sa.gov.au and Department of Water Land and Biodiversity Conservation http://www.dwlbc.sa.gov.au/

The Natural Heritage Trust http://www.nht.gov.au is a Commonwealth program which funds a wide range of programs. Its South Australian Secretariat is located at the Waite Campus, Urrbrae http://www.nrm.sa.gov.au/nrm/delivery/programs/nht.html

Significant trees
