Shipwreck trails online
There are nine maritime trails along the South Australian coast
and River Murray that promote and interpret many of the State's
shipwrecks.
To explore the Kangaroo Island Shipwreck
Trail take in the introductory panels at either Kingscote or
Penneshaw, and then follow the trail of panels that tell the dramatic
stories of both tragedy and survival at each of seven shipwreck
locations. If you can't get to Kangaroo Island, the next best thing
is to see the panels
online.
Use the Investigator Strait Shipwreck Trail brochure to help you
explore the rich maritime heritage along this stretch of the Yorke
Peninsula coastline. Those who prefer their history lessons on dry
land can follow the land based trail where the interpretive
panels overlook the final resting place of the ships they describe.
However, for those who like to get up close and personal, the waterproof
brochure also includes notes for divers. Contact the DEH
Infoline to purchase a copy of the Investigator Strait Shipwreck
Trail brochure.

2007 Schools Heritage Competition
Self confessed heritage 'freak' Keith Conlon thinks that the DEH
Schools Heritage Competition is producing a whole new crop of 'heritage
freaks', that is, young people who understand, value and respect
their heritage.
Keith was a guest presenter at the 2007 Schools Heritage Competition
ceremony held at State heritage-listed Sunnybrae
Farm at Regency Park. The competition encourages students to
research an aspect of their local heritage and then innovatively
present their findings using computer technology. In 2007 the competition
theme was Heritage Postcards: showcasing local places, reflecting
this year's partnership with the Postcards TV show.
Minister for Environment and Heritage, Gail Gago, awarded prizes
to students of all ages from Reception to Year 12. To view winners
details and some of the brilliant entries see 2007
Schools Heritage Competition.
Tour a State Heritage Area without leaving
home
A great new feature of the DEH State Heritage Areas website is
the addition of interactive maps that allow you to point and click
your way through each of South Australias 17 State Heritage
Areas. To take a stroll along Petticoat Lane in Penola,
or see the sunrise over the Arckaringa
Hills, or to find out what makes the garden suburb of Colonel
Light Gardens so special, go to the Visiting
page of the State Heritage Areas website.
The website also provides an overview of the State Heritage Areas
as a group as well as presenting detailed descriptions, histories
and photographs of individual Areas. Fact sheets for significant
heritage places within each Area are included, as are location maps
and public notices.
This practical site also explains concepts of heritage assessment,
protection, conservation and legislation and provides links to a
range of related heritage information and agencies.
Russell S Ellis: Pioneer Modernist Architect
monograph now available
The annual DEH SA Built Heritage Research Fellowship at the University
of South Australia's Architecture Museum provides the opportunity
for an in-depth investigation into an aspect of the State's built
heritage. In 2006 Louise Bird, the inaugural recipient of the Fellowship,
focused her research on the domestic architecture of Adelaide-based
architect Russell Ellis (1912 - 1988). Her monograph, Russell
S Ellis: Pioneer Modernist Architect, draws from the three-volume
report on her investigations. For details on obtaining a copy, see
the Architecture
Museum website.
188 Gilles Street Restoration - the former
Beresford Arms Inn
Support from DEH is helping Adelaide City Council to conserve an
important part of Adelaide's built heritage - the former Beresford
Arms Inn, built in 1839. Read all about it and see photos and video
of the work being done to conserve South Adelaide's earliest remaining
hotel-related building at the Council's web page 188
Gilles Street Restoration. [South Adelaide's oldest hotel building
still in use as a hotel appears to be the Rob Roy in Halifax St,
a portion of which dates from 1842. The oldest hotel licence in
South Australia (31 March 1837) is held by the Edinburgh Castle
Hotel (originally known as 'Guthrie's') in Currie Street.]
