Historic shipwrecks safer

David Nutley, DEH Principal Maritime Heritage Officer, has been elected as Vice President of ICOMOS International Scientific Committee for Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICUCH) at its 2008 annual meeting.

Barbados recently became the 20th country to ratify the 2001 UNESCO convention for the protection of the underwater cultural heritage. The 20th ratification enables the Convention to come into force as international law (for signatory countries). The convention protects all forms of cultural heritage fully or partially submerged for at least 100 years and promotes international cooperation in their management. It closes a gap, particularly in the open ocean, where shipwrecks have had little or no statutory protection while becoming more exposed to commercial exploitation as technological advances enable access to sites that have been protected by their environment for hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of years.

South Australian Heritage Council

The Council is supporting a move to recognise the significance of Cornish Mining heritage sites at Moonta Mines and Burra, at both a national and international level. The initiative to list the sites is linked to the 2006 inscription on the World Heritage List of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, which recognised the contribution of these areas to the mining world.
