Funds to care for State's Heritage
The State Government allocated more than $300,000 to over 50 projects
to repair and restore State Heritage Places across South Australia.
Funds were directed towards conservation and stabilisation works,
particularly where the work would enhance the financial viability
of a place. In 2007 four projects benefited from being the first
to receive funding under the Program's new Special Grants Category
(grants above $5,000). For details see:

Heritage advice delivered direct
Heritage Advisers work closely with local Councils across a range
of community heritage issues while providing advice and assistance
to individual owners of heritage places. In 2007, the Heritage Advisory
Service network expanded to include Walkerville and Copper Coast
Councils. (See the full list of Advisers).
Heritage Branch conservation architects who provide an advisory
service to outback communities added to their understanding of the
issues around conserving remote heritage places by getting out and
about along the Oodnadatta Track and in the Gawler Ranges.
Heritage Postcards
A partnership with the Channel 9 Postcards show inspired the 2007
Schools Heritage Competition theme Heritage Postcards: showcasing
local places. The competition once again attracted a wide range
of entries from across South Australia and culminated with the Minister
for Environment and Conservation, Gail Gago, awarding prizes at
a ceremony at Sunnybrae Farm, Regency Park. View
the winning schools and entries.
'Possum' stirred on heritage
In 2007 one of DEH's regular 'Stirring the Possum' public forums
focused on built heritage: Giving the Past a Future - Celebrating
Heritage Architecture. Keynote speaker Victorian architect Kerstin
Thompson joined fellow guests Mary Marsland, Megan Lloyd and George
Kambitsis in a panel discussion led by DEH Chief Executive Allan
Holmes.
Heritage Conservation Seminars
A technical presentation about salt damp was held, involving Heritage
Advisers and practitioners, contractors and heritage owners. The
presentation was held ahead of the planned release of an updated
version of the popular DEH publication on salt damp, in collaboration
with the Adelaide City Council, the NSW Heritage Office and Heritage
Victoria.
Support for Local Government
Owners of local heritage places will benefit from Local Council
incentive schemes, as councils share $140,000 of State Government
funding, allocated through the Heritage Branch, to help identify
and support the conservation of local heritage places during the
2007/08 financial year. Read

the 2006-07 reporting period. See the 2007
Annual Report (850Kb PDF)
of the South Australian Heritage Council.
Research supported
Funding for the DEH SA Built Heritage Research Fellowship at UniSA
was extended for a futher three years. The second recipient of this
fellowship, Dr Adam Dutkiewicz, will present a seminar on his research
on the architecture of Brian Claridge during SA History Week 2008.
The current fellow, Dr Carol Cosgrove, will research Art Deco in

New State Heritage Places
Shady Grove Unitarian
Church and Cemetery, Our Redeemer
Lutheran Church of the former Koonibba Lutheran Mission, and
the Former Wolseley
Inland Aircraft Fuel Depot met one or more of the criteria for
significance in the Heritage Places Act and had their entries in
the South Australian Heritage Register confirmed.
State Heritage Places accurately pinpointed
The mapping of metropolitan State Heritage Places was completed
in readiness for releasing data to the public over the Internet
in 2008.
Sharing our knowledge
Numerous presentations were made in response to requests from a
range of different interest groups with the aim of improving community
understanding and appreciation of our built heritage. A combined
Heritage Branch presentation was made to the 2007 History Conference
around the theme of 'What is and isn't heritage?', and Senior Interpretation
Officer Robyn Ashworth spoke on 'Capturing The Public Interest:
Interpretation and Promotion of Ships Graveyards in South
Australia' at the 'New Ground' Australasian Archaeology Conference
2007 held in Sydney in September.
Maritime artefacts kept safe
DEH acted to prevent the sale by auction of a number of unregistered
historic shipwreck relics, negotiating with their custodian for
their future safe-keeping.
Keeping in touch
Advisers and practitioners involved with looking after heritage
were kept up-to-date with heritage news and events from via the
monthly SA Heritage E-News bulletin. The Heritage South
Australia Newsletter delivered news and heritage stories to
its 5,000 strong readership in March and September.
Behind the scenes
Compiling and maintaining accurate databases, monitoring the status
of places, ensuring sensitive development (over 760 Development
Applications relating to State Heritage Places were considered by
DEH in 2007), assisting local councils, researching, recording and
fieldwork. This work forms the foundation for heritage protection
in this State.
